"I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm -- neither hot nor cold -- I am about to spit you out of my mouth." (3:15-16). If something is cold, it may be preserved for a little while, then heated up to remove toxins (and it might be useful). If something is hot, it is likely to remain useful. But something that is lukewarm is likely to spoil rapidly!
Verse 3:20 seems a bit strange: Jesus knocking on the door of a Christian Church asking to be let in! We must ask ourselves, Would I recognize Jesus if I saw Him in person today? Am I living as Christ taught? Is my church functioning as The Body of Christ in our world today? Perhaps we need to re-read and take to heart James, 1 John and Jude!
"To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne." (3:21).
It is believed that Laodicia was a banking center, proud of its wealth. Noted for the manufacture of rich garments of black glossy wool. And, had a medical center that made powder for the treatment of eye problems.
Members of the Laodicia type of church are likely to have a great deal of wealth in this world. Some of them may be successful business leaders. They are quite satisfied with things the way they are. They probably do not like people who they feel are "rocking the boat" by advocating change -- saying we are entering a new era!
It maybe extremely difficult for them to "overcome" but those who do maybe a great asset to everyone!
