Verses 1-5 of chapter 14 show God's people in God's city, while verses 6-13 show angels proclaiming God's message to those living on the earth. The first angel proclaimed, "...Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water." (14:7).
"A second angel followed and said, 'Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great, which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries.'" (14:8). This is the first mention of Babylon in the book of Revelation, and the first words about Babylon are that it has fallen! Babylon is more fully described in chapters 17 & 18.
The third angel proclaims that anyone who worships the beast and receives his mark will be tormented. God has a way of turning things around. Earlier those who did not receive the mark of the beast could not buy or sell in 13:17, but in 14:3 & 15:3 they are singing a new song! Whereas those who received the mark of the beast are now being tormented -- the smoke (spirit) of their torment raises for ever and ever (14:11). "This calls for patient endurance on the part of the saints who keep God's commandments and remain faithful to Jesus." (14:12).
